Fishing Coach Angling Lessons Coarse Fishing Stoke on Trent

Welcome to the Mick Ellams Angling / Fishing Coach website.

My name is Michael Ellams, though everyone calls me Mick (occasionally I have been called much worse).

Like most people fishing today, I started fishing while I was at school - I would have been about 9 at the time. I didn't catch anything, so didn't go again until some school friends asked me to go with them when I was about 13. Naturally, as you do, I pestered my parents to buy me a rod, reel, floats etc and off I went. Once again I never caught anything, until my 3rd visit to the local cut (canal). My float went under and I caught my first fish, a massive Gudgeon all of about 3 inches in length! Well that was it - another followed, then another. In total I caught 29 small fish in that session, gudgeon, perch and roach.

I was well and truly hooked.

A few more years passed, a little bit more experience and a few more fish. I joined a local fishing club, got to know some of the members in the club. One old member in particular, called Jack, took me under his wing (as they say) and taught me the correct way to fish. For the last 5 or 6 years I found out I hadn't even attached my float correctly, plumbed the depth or even tied a hook on correctly. Looking back it made think of all those I fish I had caught in the past, was it by skill or more by accident.

I brought books watched videos (no DVD's in them days) went around pools especially on match days and watched what other anglers were doing. My technique improved, the different species of fish caught improved and so did the size, even though I had to wait a few years before I caught my first double figure carp.

Then I got married to Lynne along came 2 children Victoria and James. Then the fishing stopped, once again. When Victoria and James were 4 & 3 respectively, off we went fishing. This time everyone was taught correctly how to fish, even Lynne joined in. This was my first coaching success. And many happy fishing days and fishing holidays passed over the years.

Then came my big break.

While having a survey done on one of our club pools (Stone Private Angling Club) by the Environment agency, I was asked if I would like to have a go at being an Angling Coach. After a conversation or two with Lynne, a few phone calls later I was booked onto the next PAA coaching course at Pershore College in Worcestershire.

It was here that the hard work started. We were shown how to properly coach and to teach students how to fish correctly. After many long hours in the classroom, exams and plenty of homework the day of assessment came. Glad to say I passed and can now pass on my knowledge and experience to you. Thanks to Derek and Richard the tutors at Pershore college.
